Journeyman to End in December or January
This is not the news we were hoping for, but according to TV Squad, Journeyman is set to end on its 12th episode. It seems as though with the writers strike that will be the end of the series, unless NBC picks it up next year which doesn’t sound like its going to happen. We are on episode ten tonight, meaning there are two more episodes for the show and that could be all she wrote, literally. Here is what TVSquad had to say:
This news is sure to upset fans of the NBC show Journeyman: the show will probably end with the 12th episode.
And just so you know this isn’t a guess, this word comes straight from Kevin Falls, creator of the show. He says that because of the show’s so-so ratings, and the fact that it doesn’t look like the writers strike is going to end anytime soon, that episode will probably be the last one for the series. If it’s any consolation for fans, Falls says that the episode does work as sort of a series finale and does answer a lot of questions. Though I would guess that those answers won’t be enough for hardcore fans. It also leaves an opening for a second sesaon if that were to occur.
The 12th episode will air either at the end of December or early January.
A truly sad day for Journeyman fans…

[…] What a sad morning it was, it started out good, but then I got online, did my usual roundup of news for my TV Blogs, and saw some of the worst news since the cancellation of Jericho, Journeyman has been put on notice. Tonight Journeyman airs its tenth episode, and it will have two more before it is off the air. There is no official word on cancellation, but we do know that this is the end of the season, and there is very little chance if any that NBC brings it back next year, especially with the poor ratings. This and Chuck are my favorite new shows of the year, Journeyman for me being the more consistent one. Just like Jericho, Journeyman had a select following, it didn’t grab any of the ratings. Read my full comments on the ending of Journeyman, on my Journeyman Blog. […]

This news sucks big time. This is a consistently well written show and what American networks do not realize is that it discourages us foreigners from getting suckered in to US-made series. As a result, I never slavishly followed the US into Lost, Heroes or many of those so-called “hits” after consistent disappointments surrounding premature cancellations or network tinkering. Journeyman managed to break that for me because it truly was excellent.
I know NBC must look at its domestic market first, but I would have thought the prospect of strong international sales would be considered. In the US, 10 p.m. is probably a tad late, but you can totally have seen this airing at 8.30 p.m. in Britain, Australia or New Zealand. (It probably won’t now, because it’s been labelled a flop and programmers in other countries will be too scared or lazy to determine otherwise.)
So thanks, NBC, for building an audience for an excellent show despite its lousy timeslot, and for being so daft that you don’t see that this does the network’s credibility some damage. After all, who gets the blame? Fox, for making it, or NBC, for not having the intelligence to see there were other factors at play with the poor ratings?
The only consolation is that I only have to buy a single season’s worth of DVDs rather than the seven I plan to fork out for Mission: Impossible. Ah, remember those days when networks stuck with shows?

Say it ain’t so!!
I am in mourning.
Journeyman is the best tv show I’ve seen in years! And now it has been given its walking papers.
The following is a copy of a recent write-up of mine about the show. It appears to have become prophetic:

Nov 13, 2007
Generally, when I start watching a television show at its beginning, I have surely doomed it. It seldom gets beyond 4 episodes. So, I was very nervous when I started watching “Journeyman” on NBC on Monday nights. I had been looking forward to it since the middle of the summer and I loved the actors.
I had first seen Kevin McKidd, the show’s star, on HBO’s “Rome” last spring and was thoroughly impressed at how well he portrayed his gruesome character. I just needed to see how well he would pull off a modern-day San Franciscan time-traveler with an American accent (McKidd is Scottish).
He is brilliant.
I had first seen Moon Bloodgood on “Eight Below” and then again on television’s “Day Break” (which bombed after 4 episodes, of course, because I watched it from the beginning) and was also fond of her acting abilities. She plays McKidd’s time-traveling counterpart.
She is awesome.
Reed Diamond has had a great career doing bit parts on tv and in movies. I was curious how he would fare playing a regular on what I had hoped would become a long-running series. Diamond plays McKidd’s cop brother who thinks his brother has lost his marbles since he is not aware of his time-traveling.
He couldn’t be better.
Gretchen Egolf, who plays McKidd’s wife, happens to be aware of and tormented by his time-traveling (which, by the way, he has no control of and can be “taken on assignment at any given time”). Honestly, I don’t recall having seen her in anything before this show. She has been given a tall order by playing a challenging role.
She is magnificent.
I am typically a person who gets glued to a tv by sports or politics, hardly ever by a show (though I am guilty of following a reality show from time to time). This is probably because I crave a good plot and clever plot development - both are rare these days. However, “Journeyman” not only started out intelligently, but has gotten better every episode. It is one of those few television phenomena that satiates my interest and anticipation.
It also delivers.

I never should’ve opened my big mouth.

Great review, Erik. You sound like me with your favourite shows. I wonder if we are plain smarter than the idiots who were watching The Bachelor while Journeyman was on.

Someone has done up a ‘Save Journeyman’ petition which I would recommend we look at:

Very true Jack Yan. I was nervous that I was possibly jinxing the show. In truth, I know that isn’t so. But I am so disappointed that it has been put on the shelf - even if it turns out to be temporary.
Kevin Falls is so creative. And, as I mentioned in my review, I think that whoever did the casting did a perfect job. I also love how the one-episode plots intertwine with the overall plot.
PLEASE NBC!! Don’t cancel this one!!

Hey guys good to hear from you both. I had just recently heard about the “Save Journeyman” campaign and will be posting something on that soon. I am trying to get something in cooperation with the gentleman running that, we have quite a few readers here, so hopefully we can do our part in saving the show!

Why is it that all the good shows always get canceled? Shares with flash but no substance top the charts, while shows like this–which are thought-provoking and mature–go practically unnoticed. We can only hope that its fate will change… I know I enjoy it even more than Heroes (which is definitely one of NBC’s top shows), and I’m a die hard fan.

Joel, I look forward to it. I also found one gentleman who suggests we download from nbc.com on Monday when Life is on to show that there is demand for Journeyman. Even if NBC does not order a back nine, let’s hope a JAG situation arises and another network picks up our favourite show.

Please NBC do not cancel this show!!!! Loved the storyline, characters and relationships between the characters!! Maybe this show should go to the Sci-Fi channel, that station not only has hardcore fans here (such as myself) but in England where Kevin lives…anything but PLEASE don’t kill it..it does have loyal fans, please show us some loyalty.
